BoostNL Interview: LA HIJA DE TODAS LAS RABIAS

A recipient of Hubert Bals Fund development support, the Nicaraguan LA HIJA DE TODAS LAS RABIAS, to be directed by Laura Baumeister, is both a powerful social drama and a strong mother/daughter story set in the bleakest of locations, a garbage dump in the country’s capital Managua. Eleven-year-old Maria is full of rage because her mother abandoned her on this site, but she learns to stand up for herself and joins a gang of other abandoned children who work in exchange for food and shelter, all the time increasing the distance between her and her repentant mother.

“The dump in the script works as a microcosm for Nicaragua´s current themes, such as its political situation, ongoing sexism, environmental issues, among others,” explains producer Rossana Baumeister of the project budgeted at €226,730.But it is also a window to think about those themes all around the world. The film deeply explores the mother-daughter relationship, a universal bond, in a dramatic and almost unreal context.”

Laura Baumeister is both a sociologist and filmmaker and has been selected for notable festivals as Cannes Semaine de la Critique, Morelia International Film Festival, FICUNAM and the Stockholm Festival among others. “Laura is a rising director in Central America and in Europe,’ explains producer Rossanna. “She has shown, mainly with her films ISABEL IM WINTER, FUERZA BRUTA and OMBLIGO DE AGUA consistency in the themes she works with, as well as a very mature sense of mise-en-scène. She always portraits very strong female characters and their desires, ambitions and struggles.”

The production team is looking to go into production on the 80-minute project in late 2019 ahead of a mid-2020 delivery. Meanwhile they are gearing up for the Utrecht Boost NL experience. “We are looking for a first exposure of the project to industry professionals as well as for professional feedback, co-production and industrial partners, and training experience.”
