The Fellows of 2023/2024

Their works were also featured in the Storyspace exhibition.

ARK Fellowships 2023

ARK

ARK consists of an international and interdisciplinary group of designers, artists, researchers and hackers. As a collective, they shape modern technologies from a holistic and progressive perspective, seeking to make technology open, inclusive and fair. During the Fellowship programme, ARK explored how they can collaborate as a non-hierarchical collective and which methods are suitable to achieve this. They took the Archive as their starting point. Inclusiveness and the value of polyphony were central in this. Not only in ARK itself, in their approach to the Archive, but also as a way to get a more complete picture of history and culture in general: how can we bring non-dominant stories to the forefront? How can we give space to other stories?

SPELA PETRIC portait photo ANZE SEKELJ

Špela Petrič

Intermedia artist Špela Petrič is concerned with how societal values shape technology and how the technology we use in turn produces what becomes "common sense". She brings together different disciplines and partners across academic, research and industry sectors to reflect their endeavors with the wider public. For the Fellowships programme, she explored advanced technologies that are developed to help make bodies better and healthier. But where exactly can we see the traces of AI's operation, how can we recognise its influence? To find the answer, she started in an unexpected place, where AI is already being used to improve bodies: in greenhouse tomato cultivation

Portret Tina Farifteh Fellowships 2023

Tina Farifteh

In her research for this fellowship titled ‘The Empathic Rage’, Tina Farifteh investigates the link between empathy and anger and asks whether a combination of these emotions/potentials can lead to action. In doing so, she examines triggers and progression of emotions over time. Do the emotions remain stable, or do they desensitise you over time? How can you strike an ethical balance between evoking anger and empathy without falling into manipulative populism? “Can I also capture people's tears, fists and screams? What do those emotions say about our times and what do they say about us as human beings and as creators?”.
