For more than a thousand years, Hollandse nieuwe (young herring, eaten raw) has been part and parcel of Dutch national culture. Every year, millions of people in the Netherlands and abroad look forward to the arrival of the first barrel. In the Middle Ages, the Dutch economy largely ran on the earnings of herring fishing; today, only two ships from Scheveningen still catch this edible heritage under a Dutch flag. Captured with Retel Helmrich’s unique single-shot camera, a disappearing piece of Dutch Glory is told from within.
