How does a UN peace mission work? Robert Oey was given a unique glimpse behind the scenes and shows how acting chief of operations Joost de Wolf struggles with the mandate and a lack of political determination.
Colonel Joost de Wolf is an officer with the Dutch Marine Corps. In 2014, he starts leading military operations as part of the UN peace mission in Mali. When the Malinese government threatens to thwart the brittle peace process, De Wolf tries to use a mix of charm and dash to regain control. But he is hampered by a lack of political will from both the UN headquarters and the authorities in The Hague. De Wolf decides to act autonomously, but this inadvertently jeopardises his military career. A unique glimpse behind the scenes.
