In this documentary, inhabitants of Bakel in Noord-Brabant and Bakel in Senegal turn out to have more in common than just the name of their residence. Is there a parallel universe, after all?
Two seemingly sleepy villages awaken at the break of dawn of globalisation. While some inhabitants of Bakel try to go with the flow of the developments of modern life, others frenetically cling to nostalgic ideas of what their Noord-Brabant residence used to be. In this documentary, the village of Bakel in the Netherlands and the village of Bakel in Senegal are portrayed. It is precisely the persistent mirroring of these two villages that makes this observing film a universal portrait of man, playing with stereotypes and filled with paradoxes.
