Apart from tossing spice nuts and putting shoes by the chimney, the debate around the racist components in the attitude towards Black Pete has now become a fixed element of the Dutch Sinterklaas tradition. In the build-up to the 2013 celebration, the discussion flares up to such an extent that even the judge and the United Nations pronounce judgement. Sunny Bergman analysed the allegedly contemptable prejudices underlying the roguish character that serves as a helper to the saintly man, and dressed up as Black Pete she confronted unsuspecting passers-by in London.
