Filmmaker Aliona van der Horst inherits part of a house in Russia, including unknown stories about the eventful history her farming relatives lived through.

The way to the heart is through the stomach. But if there is hardly any food, can you still speak of love? Filmmaker Aliona van der Horst gets to the crux of this question in this personal family portrait of life in Russia under Stalin’s rule. It starts with a section of the family home in a Russian forest that Van der Horst inherits after her mother’s demise. By cleaning up the house along with her Russian relatives, she learns about previously unknown chapters of an eventful family narrative, and about solidarity in times of dearth and fear.
