Musical documentary about the influence of the Netherlands-East Indian history on modern pop music. How prominent were themes like nostalgia and the identity struggle?
Between 1945 and 1962, more than 350,000 Indo people returned to their original motherland: the Netherlands. Among them many artists who, in individual ways, brought about change in the Dutch musical landscape and far beyond. Incorporating interviews and archive footage from both the colonial era and of original performances, the film shows how Netherlands-East Indian musicians with a touch of nostalgia managed to assimilate, while looking for their own identity. Their music always turned out to be the leitmotif.
