Heroic drama about the widow Kenau Hasselaer, a historical figure who during the Eighty Years’ War worked as a shipbuilder and timber merchant in Haarlem. When her youngest daughter Gertruide falls into pro-Spanish hands, Kenau decides to take up arms and, along with the women of Haarlem, fight the occupiers tooth and nail. Only Kathelijne, Kenau’s remaining daughter, does not join the fight. Does Kenau mistrust her or does she have another reason to stay outside the women’s army?
