Documentary about a theatre performance in which seven boys candidly and vulnerably show how they became men. Did they lean on each other? Or on their fathers? And what if these were absent?
What or who do adolescent boys lean on? Each other? Their fathers? And what if these are absent? In the theatre performance Staal, they play it, in the documentary Jongens waren we, they (literally) look themselves in the eyes. On stage, seven playing, fighting, vulnerable boys wait for real life to begin - before coming out as real men. The film seeks out the actors in the side wings where they, looking at themselves in a mirror, speak frankly about their personal lives.
