Glimpse behind the scenes of the oldest zoo in the Netherlands, which has been welcoming visitors for over 175 years. Isn’t it outdated to put animals behind bars in downtown Amsterdam?
The oldest zoo in the Netherlands is in the midst of a radical renewal process. Is it still acceptable in the 21st century to lock up wild animals in a city? Or is the contemporary zoo actually essential, now that truly free nature no longer exists? For more than a year, documentary director Willemiek Kluijfhout followed the keepers, the designers, the management and especially the animals themselves.
