Once upon a time, the remote ancestors of the people of Groningen refused to be subjected by the Romans. Many centuries later, these people were conquered after all, and the discovery of natural gas heralded sweeping change. One or two oddballs expressed their objections, but the Netherlands energetically proceeded to lay out the gas network. Today, our country is one of the richest countries in Europe, and construction workers in Groningen who build or demolish houses follow a course in dealing with emotions. How do we cope with the repercussions of the extraction of natural gas that hardly anybody could predict?
