Men making cat calls in the street? Artist Noa Jansma immortalised them via selfies she put on her Instagram account, triggering a lot of media attention.

#Dearcatcallers by Noa Jansma is an Instagram account assembled during the month of August 2017. It was Jansma's purpose to raise awareness around the phenomenon of public harassment of women, also known as catcalling. On her account, she posted selfies with each of her catcallers for one month. The catcallers’ enthusiastic participation in the series underlines the lack of any awareness of their behaviour that exceeds moral standards.

The use of social media as a medium for digital storytelling creates an intimate relationship with the viewer. With the hashtag #dearcatcallers, women across the world submitted their own selfies with catcallers. In the reactions, people shared stories and experiences and had extensive discussions. The project gained a lot of media attention and had more than 320,000 followers and scored tens of millions of views.
