Personal documentary in which the personal history of the director’s father, a Chinese restaurant owner in Maastricht, and the major historic developments in China run parallel.


In her documentary, Yan Ting Yuen tries to get access to the history of her reticent father, a Chinese restaurant owner in Maastricht. She discovers this history is inextricably linked with major developments in the past fifty years in his native country. It turns out her father has led three different lives, in Dapeng, China, in Hong Kong and in the Netherlands. The small-scale story of the director’s father and family, told against the background of the large-scale history of China and the Chinese diaspora.
