TV series in four episodes follows the turbulent life of Queen Wilhelmina (played by Anne-Wil Blankers), from her early childhood until shortly after her abdication of the throne in 1948. On 23 November 1898, after a relatively carefree childhood, Wilhelmina is inaugurated in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam, at the age of 18. Shortly after, she marries Henry, duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. In 1909, their only child Juliana is born. Wilhelmina's kingship meets with a lot of adversity. The sovereign has to contend with political changes in the new century, two world wars, but also her problematic marriage with Henry, who appears to be involved in affairs with other women and spends large sums of money. The series shows how Wilhelmina, whose ambition and upbringing urge her to demand the utmost of herself, fulfils this task.
