After the great flood of 1953, the romantic Dutch farmer Gauke decides he never wants to have wet feet again. He gets on his bicycle and keeps pedalling until he ends up in a village in the south of Italy.


After losing his farm in the great flood of 1953, the romantic Dutch farmer Gauke decides he never wants to have wet feet again. He gets on his bicycle and keeps pedalling until he ends up in a village in the south of Italy. Here, he starts his new, improved life and miraculously manages to grow tulips that brighten the drab rocky surroundings. Gauke grows into a living legend. Thirty years later, an Italian police inspector tries to find out what happened to this Dutch farmer, in this fairylike tragicomedy.
