This Is Me

Director: Els van Driel
Sixteen-year-old Allen Tumusiime grew up in Uganda, where she was considered worthless as a girl. Allen sees dancing as a way to be free: this is me and I’m something to see. Also as a girl, or a woman.
‘When you dress nice, they touch you everywhere and when you walk alone, a man can take you and abuse you. This happens to many girls in Uganda.’ Allen grew up with the idea that she was worthless as a girl. To protect herself, she used to wear boy’s clothes and keep her hair cropped. In the Netherlands, Allen overcomes her past and her lack of self-esteem by dancing. Her choreography tells her story. After all, a girl or a woman is really something to see, too.
