They are packed together in a dim room: rats, snakes, geese, pigeons. A neglected man and woman, who also live in this peculiarly equipped asylum, encage and chain the animals, let them crawl across their bodies and keep them in a suffocating stranglehold. Experimental black-and-white film about the craving for power and love, full of dreamy and at times horrifying images. The two actors are people from the social dregs of Johannesburg society. The Asylum is screened together with Vredeveld’s re-edited Memento Mori (2005).
