In this portrait of a Moroccan family living in a big city, clichés about both the Dutch and Moroccan cultures are not shunned. The protagonist is the twenty-year-old unemployed Ap, who kills time by sleeping and hanging around with friends. He is faced with an important choice in life. He wants to become more serious and especially rich. The film follows the boy from being a scooter thief to a poultry slaughterer and from a job `behind a desk' to being a bank robber. He grapples with a tough decision: Should he follow his successfully integrated brother or should he choose for his parents' traditional lifestyle and eventually marry a bride from Morocco? Shouf shouf habibi!, director Ter Heerdt's feature film début, was awarded a Golden Film.
