Sam Waagenaar (1908-1997), widely-travelled epicurean swept along by the events of the twentieth century. From shoe salesman, he works his way up to publicity manager, light opera singer and actor in Hollywood. While playing an extra as a German soldier there, his parents are killed in Auschwitz. After the war, he regains his optimism in the smiles of the women of Rome. As a journalist-photographer, he travels all over the world. An unconventional film portrait full of archive footage, based on Waagenaar’s unpublished autobiography. A tribute to the individual’s resilience.
