A filmmaker with a passion for smell and a boy with ‘smell blindness’ together look for a cinematographic alternative. The result: a tribute to the senses.
Film can stir many sensations, but the fact that the medium cannot convey smell is a thorn in director Denise Janzee’s flesh. Along with 13-year-old Stan, who suffers from anosmia, or smell blindness, she looks for possibilities to convey smell via the other senses. Freshly cut grass, a refreshing summer rain after a sweltering hot day, the smell of chocolate, the familiar smell from ‘the past’. How do you experience these if you can’t smell anything? And: Can a film start smelling bad?
