De Industrie: drugsland Nederland is an online interactive documentary consisting of a graphic layer that maps the Netherlands, revealing drug networks and presenting personal stories via audio interviews. At their own pace, viewers/listeners can find their way through the netherworld of the Dutch drug network.
The project introduces various people, including students, shop owners and seniors. They are the 'common' people constituting the vast network of pot growers, coke barons and XTC mules. In seventeen audio stories, people who in some way or other ended up in the 'industry' tell about the kick and the stress involved in these illegal activities.
The drug network is represented by an interactive wheel that provides insight in the connections between the different roles. The personal stories are linked to locations in order to, besides aurally with the interviews, visually take the viewer to the locations where these people work. By entering your postal code, you go through newspaper headlines and end up in for example an XTC lab, a pot attic or contraband containers near you.
The project can be watched on a desktop, tablet or smartphone. Moreover, there is a six-part podcast series of De industrie in which creator Mirka Duijn tells about her encounters with the various characters from the interactive doc.
