How do you feel when you end up in a world where you are no longer seen, but watched? That’s the question in this essayistic documentary. For how long do we keep addressing people as 'newcomers'?
The three protagonists in Niki Padidar’s film have been living in the Netherlands for a short or longer period, but they always get the same questions: Where do you come from? Do you speak Dutch? Do you get a darker tan in the sun? Having left Iran at the age of seven, Padidar herself knows these questions all too well. In Al wat je ziet, one of the people she talks to is Somalian Khadija, who has been a 'newcomer' for 27 years. Through these conversations, this scrupulously conceived documentary examines what it means to be subjected to other people’s projections. She tries to find an answer to the question: 'If nobody knows who you were, are you still yourself?'
