Zoenzucht tells the story of Engel, a girl of barely nineteen who is struck down by a curious disease called 'zoenzucht' (a longing to kiss). Everyone she kisses is struck down motionless. Engel has an indefinable attraction for people, and men in particular. She starts a quest for the origins of her urge to kiss and first turns to the local doctor. The film is set in a working-class area, during a steamy heat wave. Engel rents a room above the local snackbar, that is run by the single mother Josefina and her son Jonas. Facing the snackbar is the local supermarket run by the very pregnant Agnes, her husband Leo and their daughter Angelina.
