Many monumental country manors in eastern Groningen from the heyday of the Grain Republic (1870-1920) are now in decline. The occupants have the choice: salvage what can be rescued or leave.
The vast plains of eastern Groningen are marked by old, large country manors. They owe their opulent appearance to the unprecedented prosperity of the gentleman farmers of the Grain Republic at the end of the 19th century, the heyday of this region. Today, these once magnificent edifices are languishing. The region is a disadvantaged area and is suffering earthquakes and subsidence. 'Weeping brides', these farmer’s cathedrals of yesteryear are called. In Huilende bruiden, two of the dilapidated manors reflect on their own decay. The occupants try to save them, but is this really possible? And how do the farms themselves look at their imminent downfall?
