Fadil is an Iraqi refugee who now interprets telephone conversations between refugees and government agencies. How impartial can he remain when he recognises his own story in the things people say?

The Iraqi refugee Fadil is a telephone interpreter. From his attic, he translates conversations between refugees and government agencies like the IND. ‘I’m your interpreter, I’m impartial and I won’t interfere with this conversation,’ he states at the beginning of each contact. But although he lives in the Netherlands with his family, he knows people who are still in war zones. How does it affect him when a conversation faces him with certain dilemmas, when he relives his own history, powerlessly listening to what people say?
