A violin maker in Amsterdam and his cousin in Hoogeveen want to cash in on plans to build a hotel. They concoct a strategy, with tragic consequences. Historical drama, based on Thomas Rosenboom’s novel.
Amsterdam, 1888. Property tycoon Henkenhaf wants to build a hotel opposite the Central Station, but he meets with opposition when violin maker Vedder wants to be bought out for fifty thousand guilders. In Hoogeveen, Vedder’s cousin Anijs, a pharmacist who has gotten himself into a jam, wants to help poor peat cutters move to America. Price tag: fifty thousand guilders. The two join forces and devise a plan, with tragic consequences. This historical drama is based on Thomas Rosenboom’s eponymous novel.
