Whistleblowers, ex-inmates and an investigative journalist present a shocking image of the first privatised penitentiary in South Africa. Warders are underpaid, convicts are used as money spinners.
In 2001, the first privately run penitentiary of South Africa, the Mangaung Prison, was opened. Security services company G4S, a controversial British multinational, promised to provide the best facilities and a humane treatment – at the lowest rate, obviously. In practice, as demonstrated by leaked surveillance videos and witness accounts about excessive violence, neglect and unimaginable torture, things were quite different. Warders are underpaid and overloaded and fear for their lives every day. Prisoners are treated as money spinners, keeping them far from rehabilitation. What are the negative consequences of this growing privatisation trend on society?
