Using unique archive material, writer Tessa Leuwsha revives the world of her Surinamese grandma: a washerwoman who shortly after the abolition of slavery moved to Paramaribo from the interior.
Grandma Fansi was a Surinamese washerwoman who shortly after the abolition of slavery travelled from the interior to the big city of Paramaribo to give her children a better life. In this archival documentary, writer, filmmaker and granddaughter Tessa Leuwsha gives her grandmother the floor via a fictitious voice-over. What were her motives for moving? In the process, a life unfolds that takes place against the background of Surinam’s development into an independent state. The story is illustrated by unique material from various archives.
