The Chinese peasant woman Yulin has a demanding life in this animated fantasy. She is poor, childless and is abused by her husband, to whom she was sold for a bag of potatoes. She takes refuge in creating mud dolls and fantasising about a better life. After the drama has reached its nadir, one of the dolls comes alive.
