LAILA

Director: Hans Heijnen
In the early 1960s, Limburg singer Bruno Majcherek and his Regento Stars scored a big hit with his version of the traditional tango Laila, about a harem lady who turned the head of a legionnaire. The miners’ orchestra of Eastern European origin sold over a million singles. The success also brought problems, as this documentary demonstrates. A spoken text that Bruno had added was not created by himself, which led to various lawsuits. The group was disbanded due to discord about royalties.
