Love is only subject to negotiation in the feature film début by Ian Kerkhof which betrayes admiration for the formal rigidity of Straub and Zwartjes.
For his feature début, Kerkhof was inspired by films by Van der Staak, Zwartjes and Straub. Using a restrained style - a minimum of editing and a static camera, with actors walking on and off the screen - the film tells the story of movie actor Kyodai, who vents his frustration about his lack of success in his sex life. This becomes increasingly violent and takes on sadomasochist traits. Golden Calf for Best Actress (Janica Draisma) and Best Feature Film in 1992.
