Mike van Diem's Oscar-winning feature debut adapted from F. Bordewijk’s classic about the feared bailiff Dreverhaven who tries to thwart his ambitious bastard son Katadreuffe’s career.
In pre-war Rotterdam, the ruthless bailiff Dreverhaven is a tyrant in his realm. Following a bankruptcy, his ambitious and stubborn bastard son Katadreuffe decides to become a lawyer. He puts everything aside to achieve his goal, including his girlfriend. A clash with Dreverhaven is inevitable. The characteristic locations in Mike van Diem’s Oscar-winning feature debut were found in places like Ghent, Antwerp and Polish Wroclaw.
