Even at an advanced age, expressionist painter Jan Sierhuis is still full of vigour and creative urge. Illustrated by his self-portraits, the Amsterdam-born artist tells his story.

Photographer Marte Visser makes her directing debuut with this portrait of painter Jan Sierhuis, who is considered one of the leading Dutch expressionists. Illustrated by his self-portraits, each marking a new decade, he cheerfully talks about his life and art, simultaneously providing a glimpse of the history of Dutch art in the twentieth century. At an advanced age, Jan is still full of high spirits and the urge to create. A genuine artist keeps bouncing back, he claims. 'Happiness is doing what you want to do.'
