'In a little while, my film legacy will for some people consist of a few interesting items among a whole caboodle and for others of a complete story about someone who looked around in the second half of the twentieth century and fantasised about the things he could not show: so, a reflection of observation and fiction. An alibi to get through to the kitchen of human nature.' This was what filmmaker Boud Smit wrote in 1999 in his filmography. He passed away on 14 November 2007. Reviewing his cinematic legacy, there is no caboodle and a lot more than a few interesting items. The Netherlands Film Festival, in association with the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision, pays tribute to a filmmaker who learned all aspects of the trade in practice and made some remarkable films, sometimes with other people, but often on his own.
