In the spring of 1945, a deportation train containing hundreds of Jewish prisoners is stranded near a German village occupied by the Red Army. Mistrust prevails. Still, an unexpected friendship between three very different women comes about.
Based on a relatively unknown episode from World War II involving deportation trains transporting captured Jewish people. They were put on transport in April 1945, because they might come in handy in future negotiations. One of these trains was abandoned by fleeing soldiers in eastern Germany, where the Russian army was advancing. Director Diesing, who had an uncle who was on this specific train, invented a story around it, involving three women: the Russian sniper Vera, the German villager Winnie and the Jewish-Dutch Simone. Although the situation condemns them to each other, they gradually, via distrust, despair and revenge, befriend each other.
