For New York-based Goldie, breaking through as a hip hop dancer is more than a dream: it is a way to survive. Sam de Jong’s successor to hit debut Prins is a visually sparkling urban fairy-tale in which the gritty, harsh reality and cheerful, energetic animations go hand in hand.
For New York-based Goldie, breaking through as a hip hop dancer is more than a dream: it is a way to survive. Dancing is fun, but for the characters in Goldie and This Is Me, it is primarily an outlet. With Goldie, the Dutch filmmaker Sam de Jong shows the gritty reality of street life in New York, but the energy and the striking, colourful style lend the film a positive vibe. In the short documentary This Is Me, for teenage girl Allen dancing is a way to say: here I am, and I’m worth watching. NB: the language spoken in Goldie is English. The film is screened with Dutch subtitles.
