Documentary about the Nigerian Esther Kiobel, who seeks justice for her husband who was executed in 1995, after he had revolted against Shell’s polluting operations. Almost 25 years later, Esther takes the multinational to a Dutch court.
In the 1990s, Shell polluted the Nigerian Ogoniland in their hunt for oil. Animals were killed and crops were rendered foul. When the inhabitants of the region revolted against it, the corrupt Nigerian authorities retaliated ruthlessly. Nine men were executed in 1995, after a show trial aimed to deter environmental and human rights activists. Among them the husband of Esther Kiobel, who after years of battle finally dares to take Shell to court.
