We all know M.C. Escher’s mesmerising art, but what kind of a man was he? Based on previously unpublished letters, Escher tells his life story, 44 years after his demise.
"I’m afraid there’s only one person in the world who can make a really good film about my work: me", M.C. Escher wrote to a collector of his art in 1969. And this is exactly what Escher does in this documentary, as a symbolic director. Escher’s personal documents, including letters and diaries, present a great description of who he was, what he thought and felt and what he was looking for. His emotions and reflections could not be phrased more personally, poetically or terser than Escher himself did in his private documents.
