After a series of disappointments in Hollywood, pioneering Soviet filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein travels to Mexico to shoot a new movie there in 1931. He gets under the influence of the Mexican culture and rediscovers his sexuality through a homo-erotic affair. Director Peter Greenaway applies a broad range of cinematographic means - from split-screens to theatrical staging and hectic edits - in his dramatization of this important episode. The experiences turn conceptual filmmaker Eisenstein into an artist who is fascinated by man.
