Last year, the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag presented a retrospective exhibition of Mark Rothko (1903-1970), known for his immense and intense colour planes. Filmmaker Marjoleine Boonstra tranquilly meanders through the life and work of the American artist, rectifying a few persistent misconceptions, but leaving the mystery intact. Connoisseurs and people from Rothko’s circle, including his son Christopher, reflect on his sources of inspiration and the realisation of his ultimate dream: Rothko Chapel in Texas.
