Documentary about a red hot potato in today’s global politics: a collection of art works from long vanished civilisations is the stake of a grim power struggle between Russia and Ukraine, the Netherlands being the arbitrator.
The travelling exhibition ‘The Crimea – Gold and Secrets of the Black Sea’ is taken hostage in the basement of the Allard Pierson Museum in Amsterdam. With Putin’s annexation of the Crimea, the art collection has become stateless. The treasures that were once excavated on the peninsula have turned into a plaything in a grim power struggle between museums in the Crimea and the Ukrainian government. Both parties claim the archaeological collection as roots of their identities. Unintentionally, the Netherland becomes an arbitrator.
