Road movie based on the 1979 tale De nietsnut by Frans Kellendonk. The film tells the story of a young man who has marked time all his life to avoid following in his father's footsteps. After the mysterious murder of his father, the alibi disappears for the man's carefully cherished, sheltered passivity. In a sleepless night, he decides to go to the scene of the crime in Belgium. During the long car drive from Amsterdam to the Ardennes the man, who is usually so tight-lipped, tells his story to a complete stranger, a hitchhiker. Driven by a vague infatuation, he tries to turn his father, disdained in life, into a tragic hero and himself into the `crown prince' and protagonist in an exemplary Hamlet story.
