Examination of the intriguing emotion of boredom and the lost capacity of idleness follows the experiences of several people, from a Dutch adolescent to a Wall Street broker and a former spy of 93 years old.
A film about the intriguing emotion of boredom and the lost capacity to do nothing. Although boredom in general is considered a fascinating subject, people usually hasten to say that they are never bored themselves. Whereas idleness can urge people to contemplate why they do what they do. A long period of inactivity may give rise to unimagined thoughts and surprising experiences. The experiences of a youngster from Doetinchem, a 45-year-old woman who shot a few children in her childhood to 'liven things up', a Wall Street stockbroker, a desert nomad and a former spy who is now 93 are interwoven, in an attempt to find out what could be a meaningful way of life. The voice-over, spoken by John Malkovich with his intriguing timbre, consists of excerpts from Fyodor Dostoevsky's Notes from Underground and Bret Easton Ellis' American Psycho.
