Take a virtual walk through the bombed-out Iranian Kurdish village where one of the directors lived as a baby, and hear the moving stories of former residents.
Big Village by Beri Shalmashi and Lyangelo Vasquez is an interactive documentary about Gewredê (‘big village’ in Kurdish), the bombed-out headquarters of an Iranian Kurdish resistance movement of the 1980s. It is also the place where Shalmashi lived with her parents when she was a baby before they fled to the Netherlands. She has since visited ex-combatants and their children all over the world to reconstruct these perilous times she can’t remember. For this project, the village has been recreated virtually in 3D so it can be explored as in Google Street View, but with the inaccuracies that memory inevitably produces.
