Zwart ijs

Director: Geertjan Lassche
Many Dutch marathon skaters are from rural Christian parts of the country. Skating is practised here with enthusiasm and the church’s approval, as long as Sunday remains a day of rest. But modern times and professionalization put pressure on the traditions. Is top-class sport still compatible with religion? The documentary filmmaker follows skaters René Ruitenberg, Geert Jan van der Wal and three generations of the Klompmaker family in a year that an Elfstedentocht (skating marathon in Friesland) may be held.
