When Yin Meets Yang

Director: Young-Ju Yoo
A South Korean woman and her Dutch partner are confronted with cultural and linguistic barriers. They ask themselves: Can love truly bridge the gap between their differences?

Like many intercultural couples, South Korean Young-Ju and her Dutch partner Leon navigate between conflict and harmony. What’s self-evident to one can feel unfamiliar to the other. This stylized graduation film by filmmaker Young-Ju Yoo demonstrates how this can lead to friction. During a dinner with Leon’s family, Young-Ju suddenly feels like an outsider, cut off by a language she doesn’t understand. And as her sense of isolation deepens, Leon struggles wondering what he can do to help her. Is love enough to carry them across the distance between their cultures?

This film is part of the NFF Studentencompetitie and nominated for the EY Talent Award 2025. The winner will be announced on Monday, September 29th, during the Talent Awards Ceremony at the Stadsschouwburg Utrecht.
