When Chueca Dies

Director: Ramón Gieling
In Madrid’s Chueca neighbourhood, lives intertwine into a vibrant story of diversity, human contradictions, and the fight against intolerance. At the heart of it all lies a central question: Who has the right to love?
Chueca is the internationally known neighbourhood in downtown Madrid that has been a safe haven for the LGBTIQ community since the 1990s. But due to the shifting political climate of recent years, the neighbourhood has come under scrutiny from opponents. The film, in which genre boundaries blur, portrays a diverse group of characters: from trans people to drag queens, from young newlywed lesbians to immigrants. In a series of scenes, these protagonists regularly step out of their own lives to take on the roles of their adversaries.
