How does society deal with perpetrators? And what can be done to prevent acts that cause victims? Two offenders speak out, with the aim of better understanding their motivations.
The animated documentary Wat Is Spreken Waard? tackles a difficult subject, offering a glimpse into the thoughts of two people who have committed criminal acts. Jolanda accidentally killed her baby after falling into a postpartum depression, and Ruben was convicted of sexual abuse involving a minor. Graduating animator Leticia van Neerven gives them a voice and brings their stories to life through stop-motion animation. What can we learn by seeing how these two individuals came to commit their crimes?
This film is part of the NFF Studentencompetitie and nominated for the VPRO-documentaireprijs 2025. The winner will be announced on Monday, September 29th, during the Talent Awards Ceremony at the Stadsschouwburg Utrecht.
