After Surinamese independence, Ewald emigrates to the Netherlands. Here, the watchmaker experiences homesickness for the first time. The past he left behind keeps ticking in the present.
In the twilight zone between present and past, we see Ewald at home. His mother wished for a better future for him; he left everything behind in Suriname to look for this future in a new country. But when he is alone in the Netherlands, he longs for what he left behind. He turns inward, as that is what he knows. And he concentrates on his passion: repairing clockworks, while his past time keeps ticking in the present.
